Genieve Linda Doering was born in Oakley, Kansas, on October 24, 1904. She attended Garnett High School, and briefly worked in her father's bank. She was admitted to the Northwestern College of Liberal Arts in 1925, living in Willard Hall (later renamed the Music Administration Building.) While at Northwestern, she played tennis, and participated in the mathematics and French clubs, among others. She was also a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.
